Q: What is the proper wording for a shower invitation?
A: Showers range from casual to chic and formal to fancy so there can be no one set template for shower invitations. With today’s showers becoming more casual, invitations can be sent out in a variety of ways.

Traditionally, the hostess of the shower selects and sends out invitations.  Both pre-printed or handwritten invites are appropriate – they don’t have to be overly formal. It’s more important that the invites match the style and mood the hostess hope to achieve. All pertinent information should be listed on the invitation, including date, time, location, and who to RSVP with. If it is a theme shower, be sure to include the details and a brief explanation if it is unclear. Additionally, you may choose to include information about the couple’s color preferences. Shower gifts often include appliances for the home, so this advanced knowledge will be very helpful to wedding guests.

The number one rule of thumb with shower invitations is that you should avoid including gift registry information on the actual invitation. Information about where the couple is registered should be included in the envelope, but on its own piece of paper.

For an informal or casual shower, invitations by email or e-vites are acceptable. Email and phone can be used for workplace or surprise showers, but if you are having a more traditional shower, try to stick with a paper invitation.
